VQA Stores in British Columbia are reporting
new wine purchasing trends in the first quarter. The results are from
reported sales from 13 British Columbia VQA Stores throughout the
province. The number one selling varietal was not all that
surprisingly, merlot. The Germanic styles also continue to hold ground
with British Columbia palates as reports show Gewurztraminer holding a
spot in the top 8. The following eight wines were ranked as the top
selling wines in 1st quarter sales reports by British Columbia VQA
Stores;
1. Merlot
2. Pinot Gris
3. Chardonnay
4. Red Blends
5. White Blends
6. Pinot Noir
7. Cabernet Merlot
8. Gewurztraminer
"The average wine consumer's palates seem
to be increasingly more developed," comments Keith Almonti,
Manager of the BC Wine Museum and VQA Wine Shop in Kelowna,
"Which I think can in part be attributed to the growth in demand
of varietals such as Pinot Gris." "I'm not surprised,"
states Cindy Sheldon, Manager of Village VQA Wines in Vancouver.
"Merlots work great with the ever popular summer BBQ, just as the
Pinot Gris is normally a nice light, fruity wine that works well with
most summer salads." British Columbia Wines Continue to gain the
attention of international wine critics and consumers alike, with over
1200 awards last year, up from 952 the year before. The British
Columbia Wine Institute was created in 1990 to foster the growth of an
internationally competitive wine industry. It establishes quality
standards and delivers market, industry and export development
programs to B.C.'s wineries and grape growers. It also carries the
views of the industry to government and represents the province's wine
industry at the national and international level.
